If one of your New Year’s resolutions is getting in shape then we have just the right event for you.
At the end of January this month, Dubai Water Canal will host its first official sporting event, the DP Dragon Boat Festival.
More than 20,000 people already take part in dragon racing in the UAE every year but if you’re unfamiliar with what it is, here’s a basic breakdown.
Dragon boat racing is a team paddling sport which originates from China, although it is now widely practised around the world. The crew of a standard dragon boat is typically 22, comprising 20 paddlers in pairs facing toward the bow of the boat, one drummer setting the pace at the front and one steerer at the back.
“Anybody can do it as long as they’re in relatively good shape,” technical director of the UAE Dragon Boat Association Jason Mackenzie told.
The event will see teams of all levels competing in 200 metre-long races along Dubai Water Canal, so if you’re interested in joining a team, reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call +971 4 357 4357.
Training sessions are fully dependent on how committed the team or individual is.
Starting at Marasi Business Bay, the DP Dragon Boat Festival will include food stalls, activities for children and plenty more.
So what do you think? Fancy kicking off 2017 with a new challenge?
